On Set: The Lep

The Lep is a fantastic tragic mythology film I'm involved set during the devastating Irish famine. It's merges the legend of Ireland's pernicious leprechauns and one man's desperation to feed his family in the most adverse conditions.

I play the ruthless sheriff, pressuring John (Edwin Mullane) into paying up his meagre earnings as he tries to provide for his sick child and wife (Aoife Honohan).

Written and directed by Rik Gordon, this is a great project to be part of and will be featuring in festivals worldwide when it's completed. I can't wait.

On Set: Continental Breakfast

I was recently cast in Alec Liddle's NI Screen-funded short, Continental Breakfast, as the cuckolded husband of Charlotte McCurry's Ella. It was a bit of a change of pace for me from recent productions as it was much more grounded than some of the projects I've been involved in (no rabbit-obsessed killers, or blood-thirsty narrators). Also starring Abe Smyth, the filming was done in a fantastic little house on the Malone Road. I've already seen a  rough edit and it's looking good, so I can't wait to see the finished project.

Here's some of the pictures I managed to take on set.

Have you heard the big news!

Omagh Bomb: Twenty Years On

Today, August 15th marks the 20th anniversary of the Omagh Bomb. I wasn't directly affected, (unlike another bomb in Omagh some years later that killed my school mate Ronan Kerr) but I do remember exactly where I was when I heard - listening to the Radio 5 score updates to hear if Aston Villa could beat Everton on the opening day of the season. The news at half time was lead by sparodic reports that ten people had been killed.

The West Wing's powerhouse ensemble cast elevated the brilliant writing

Aaron Sorkin's The West Wing was a monumental achievement in 21st century television, showing that the medium could be as ambitious as cinema, and along with The Sopranos, and the often overlooked ER, shepherded in the idea that great drama could exist on television, and lead the way for the Golden Age of Television that sprung up during the mid to late noughties.

Improv 101 with Paul Mone

Since April, I have been involved in an introductory class delivered by Belfast Improv Theatre. It's taught by Paul Mone, who has several years experiencing teaching improv at the highest level, across many countries. This is all part of a drive I'm going through to upskill across a range of areas ahead of #PilotSeason2019.

Introduction to Singing with Ross Anderson-Doherty

As part of an overall plan to upskill in as many areas as I can ahead of #PilotSeason2019, I decided to improve my singing - or rather understand what I need to do to be able to start singing - so I signed up for the Introduction to Singing class delivered by Ross Anderson-Doherty at the Crescent Arts Centre.

Theatre cuts, a divide and conquer strategy

(In response to this post in The Stage magazine, I'm raising my head above the parapet, and speaking up for the practitioners who have been struggling on without any funding in Northern Ireland, which invariably, includes myself).

𝕴t isn't breaking any secret code pointing out that the arts in general in Northern Ireland have been totally decimated by cuts in recent years. The post-conflict economy was buttressed by very generous loans and grants to NI (most of which was squandered, or stolen, but that's a different website), and the arts began to thrive.

Film: Jackalope [2017]

This is the film Jackalope I made last year with the always brilliant Frontier Pictures. It's a skin-crawling comedy horror, about a eccentric man who is just a little to close to his pets.

On Set: New Belfast gangster film, Belfast Caliber 9

This is footage from a behind the scenes doc on a film I'm shooting at the minute, with the brilliant Frontier Pictures, who I worked with before on Jackalope.

They always put together a really well-equipped set, and the level of professionalism is evident in the final product.
